Senior Associate Christopher Kahanek co-authored a paper that examined damage to steel wine storage tanks during the earthquake events near New Zealand’s Cook Strait in 2013.

Marlborough, the largest wine producing region in New Zealand, was affected by a series of significant earthquake events that occurred in New Zealand’s Cook Strait in 2013. While seismic damage to buildings at the wineries was minor or non-existent, many of the wine tanks had visible deformations or other forms of minor distress, while more than 70 tanks ruptured. Senior Associate Christopher Kahanek co-authored this paper assessing the observed damage at 20 wineries throughout the Marlborough region along with an evaluation of the causes and recommendations for future design improvements.
